Gorilla vs Backyard Discovery Specs
Material quality
The Gorilla Playsets Outing uses wood, pre-cut and pre-sanded at the factory to ease assembly. The lumber is treated for durability, though the specific wood type is not explicitly named in the provided specifications. In contrast, the Backyard Discovery Mount McKinley is constructed from 100% cedar wood. Cedar is naturally resistant to decay and insects, offering a distinct advantage in longevity and structural integrity without requiring chemical treatments. This natural material provides a solid foundation for outdoor play, ensuring the set withstands weather exposure better than generic wood options over time.
Slide configuration
Gorilla Playsets includes two distinct slides: an alpine wave slide and a Tunnel Twister Slide. This dual-slide setup allows multiple children to play simultaneously without waiting, maximizing throughput in smaller yards. The Backyard Discovery Mount McKinley features a single 8-foot wave slide. While this slide is designed for swift descents, it limits simultaneous sliding capacity. If your household has multiple children who want to slide at the same time, the Gorilla model’s dual configuration offers a practical advantage in reducing wait times and increasing active play periods.
Climbing features
The Gorilla Playsets Outing includes a rock wall with a climbing rope and a safe entry ladder. The Backyard Discovery Mount McKinley offers a more extensive climbing array, including a double rock climbing wall with nine holds and a rope assist, plus a separate climbing rope ladder that is over 6 feet tall. The Backyard Discovery set provides more varied climbing challenges and vertical access points. This additional climbing infrastructure supports different skill levels and keeps children engaged longer through diverse physical activities compared to the single rock wall on the Gorilla model.
Swing options
Both swing sets provide two belt swings and one trapeze swing, offering similar core swinging experiences. The Gorilla Playsets Outing lists these swings clearly in its key specs. The Backyard Discovery Mount McKinley also includes two belt swings and one trapeze, but its features section additionally mentions a web swing. This extra web swing option on the Backyard Discovery model adds variety for different age groups and play styles. If you value having an additional swinging mode for younger or older children, the Backyard Discovery set provides a slight edge in versatility.
Footprint and size
The Gorilla Playsets Outing measures 186 inches in length, 180 inches in width, and 114 inches in height. The Backyard Discovery Mount McKinley measures 186 inches in length, 150 inches in width, and 119 inches in height. Both sets share the same length, but the Gorilla model is significantly wider. The Backyard Discovery set has a narrower footprint, which may fit better in yards with limited width. However, the Gorilla model’s wider design might offer more stability or deck space. Choose the narrower Backyard Discovery if width is a constraint in your yard layout.
Warranty coverage
The Backyard Discovery Mount McKinley comes with a 5-year warranty, providing peace of mind and protection against manufacturing defects for half a decade. The Gorilla Playsets Outing specifications do not mention a warranty period in the provided data. Without explicit warranty information, it is unclear what coverage Gorilla Playsets offers for this model. A known 5-year warranty from Backyard Discovery is a tangible benefit for long-term ownership, reducing potential repair costs and ensuring support if issues arise during the first five years of use.
