Verdict: Choose the Outing if your yard is long and narrow, or if you prefer wood roofing. Avalon vs Outing: Key Differences
Canopy and shade
The Gorilla Playsets 01-1086 Avalon Treehouse includes a heavy-duty vinyl canopy roof in green. This feature provides direct shade and helps keep the play deck cooler during sunny days. The Gorilla Playsets 01-1075-Y Outing Wood Swing Set comes with a wood roof instead. A wood roof offers a traditional aesthetic but does not provide the same level of sun protection as the vinyl option. If keeping your children cool and shaded is a priority, the Avalon’s canopy is a practical advantage for outdoor play in warm weather.
Height and clearance
The Avalon Treehouse stands taller at 126 inches in height, while the Outing Swing Set is 114 inches tall. The Outing model specifies a play deck height of 4 feet, which allows ample room for children to play underneath the structure. The Avalon’s increased overall height suggests a larger upper deck structure, potentially offering a more imposing treehouse feel. You should measure your yard to ensure the taller Avalon fits comfortably under any overhead wires or tree branches, whereas the Outing’s lower profile may be easier to fit in spaces with height restrictions.
Footprint and dimensions
Both swing sets share the same width of 180 inches, making them equally wide in your yard. However, their lengths differ significantly. The Outing Swing Set measures 186 inches in length, making it the longer structure. The Avalon Treehouse is 150 inches long. If you have a narrower but deeper yard, the Outing’s extended length might be better. Conversely, if you need to save space in the length dimension, the Avalon’s more compact depth allows it to fit into tighter areas without sacrificing width or overall play capacity.
Weight and handling
The Outing Swing Set weighs 353 pounds, while the Avalon Treehouse weighs 297 pounds. The Avalon is lighter by 56 pounds. This weight difference may impact the ease of assembly and the stability of the structure once built. Heavier structures like the Outing may feel more anchored to the ground, potentially offering better resistance against swaying during vigorous play. The lighter Avalon might be slightly easier to move or adjust during the setup process, though both are substantial wooden structures requiring secure installation.
Slide configuration
Both models feature two slides, but the types differ. The Outing Swing Set includes an alpine wave slide and a tunnel twister slide, offering variety in the sliding experience. The Avalon Treehouse features two side-by-side alpine wave slides. This side-by-side configuration allows two children to slide down simultaneously without waiting, which can increase play density. If you prefer racing or parallel play, the Avalon’s dual wave slides are a distinct advantage. The Outing’s mixed slide types provide different sensations for individual play.
Which Gorilla Playset Fits Your Yard
Buyers needing shade and a treehouse theme
The Avalon includes a heavy-duty vinyl canopy roof that provides direct shade and keeps the play deck cooler. Its treehouse theme features decorative windows that partially enclose the deck. This model stands 126 inches tall, offering a taller play experience than the Outing, which is ideal for families prioritizing sun protection and a distinct architectural style.
Shoppers with limited yard space
The Outing model has a compact footprint measuring 186 inches in length and 180 inches in width. It stands 114 inches tall, making it shorter than the Avalon. This design fits into virtually any yard, including smaller spaces. If you need a substantial playset that does not dominate your outdoor area, the reduced dimensions make this the practical choice.
Those who prefer lighter weight structures
The Avalon weighs 297 pounds, which is lighter than the Outing model that weighs 353 pounds. Both use wood construction and include dual slides, rock walls, and sandbox areas. If you prefer a structure that is easier to move or install due to lower overall weight, the Avalon offers the same play features with a lighter frame.
Families wanting a standard wood roof
The Outing features a traditional wood roof rather than a vinyl canopy. This model includes a tunnel twister slide alongside an alpine wave slide. It offers a classic aesthetic with pre-cut lumber and pre-drilled beams for assembly. If you prefer the look and feel of a wooden roof over a vinyl canopy, this model aligns with that preference.
