Key Specs for Choosing Your Set
-
Measure Your Yard Width
You must verify that your yard can accommodate the widest models. The Shenandoah spans 223 inches, which is significantly wider than the Canyon Creek at 183 inches. If your space is tight, the Shenandoah may not fit comfortably. Always leave clearance around the structure for safe movement. Check the width specification before purchasing to ensure the set fits your available area without overcrowding the yard.
-
Check Overall Height
Height impacts safety and supervision. The Shenandoah reaches 125 inches, while the Montpelier stands at 112 inches. Taller structures allow for more elaborate play features but require you to look up more often. Ensure there are no low-hanging tree branches or overhead wires that could interfere with the highest points. Verify the height spec matches your yard's vertical clearance for safe operation.
-
Assess Structural Weight
Heavier sets often indicate more material and stability. The Shenandoah weighs 481 pounds, compared to the Montpelier at 336 pounds. A heavier unit may require a more substantial base or anchoring system to remain secure during use. Consider the ground surface you will place it on. Heavier models provide a solid feel but may be harder to move if you ever need to reposition the set.
-
Consider Length for Depth
Length determines how much play area extends into your yard. The Montpelier is 193 inches long, offering more depth than the Canyon Creek at 188 inches. This extra length can accommodate additional activity zones like swings and slides. Measure from your house or fence to ensure the set does not extend too far. The length spec helps you plan the layout of your backyard play area effectively.
-
Verify Cedar Material
All three models use cedar, which offers natural durability and resistance to rot. This material choice means you do not need to compare different wood types. Cedar requires periodic maintenance to keep its appearance and structural integrity. Check that the product description confirms cedar construction. This consistent material choice simplifies your decision, allowing you to focus on size and features rather than material quality.
Frequently asked questions
Which Backyard Discovery swing set is the most durable?
All three models in this list are constructed from cedar wood, providing consistent material durability across the range. Cedar is known for its natural resistance to rot and insects. The Canyon Creek, Montpelier, and Shenandoah all share this robust build quality, ensuring long-term stability for your backyard playground.
What is the largest Backyard Discovery swing set available under $1500?
The Backyard Discovery Shenandoah Cedar Swing Set is the largest model in this selection. It measures 223 inches in width and 164 inches in length. At 481 pounds, it is also the heaviest option, offering a substantial structure for families with ample outdoor space to accommodate its significant footprint.
Does the Montpelier swing set include a sandbox?
Yes, the Backyard Discovery Montpelier Cedar Swing Set includes a sandbox. It features a multi-zone design that combines a clubhouse with the sandbox area. This configuration makes it a practical choice for families seeking varied play activities within a single structure without needing separate equipment.
How high do these cedar swing sets get?
The height varies by model. The Shenandoah is the tallest at 125 inches. The Canyon Creek stands at 119 inches high, while the Montpelier reaches 112 inches. You should check your local safety guidelines and ensure there is sufficient overhead clearance above the highest point of the structure.
Which set is best for small children who need a lower playhouse?
The Shenandoah Cedar Swing Set is designed with both a raised clubhouse and a lower playhouse. This dual-level structure allows younger children to access the lower section easily while older kids enjoy the elevated area. It supports multiple play styles simultaneously within a single cedar frame.
What color options are available for these cedar playsets?
The Canyon Creek comes with a green slide, while the Montpelier is finished in light brown. The Shenandoah features a brown color scheme. These natural cedar tones blend well with outdoor environments. The specific slide color on the Canyon Creek adds a distinct visual accent to its overall design.
Is assembly required for these Backyard Discovery sets?
Yes, assembly is required for all three models. The Montpelier verdict notes that it demands assembly effort. Given the significant weight of these structures, such as the 481-pound Shenandoah or the 387-pound Canyon Creek, you will need adequate time and assistance to properly put together the cedar components.
